Aussies Aren’t Feeling the Love this Valentine’s Day

At least it saves buying a gift?

Valentine’s Day is TODAY and we should all be feeling the romantic vibes... right?

If that isn't you and this feels like just another Wednesday well you're not alone - according to new data from the dating website eharmony, Aussies apparently aren’t as fussed with Valentine’s Day as the rest of the world.

Aussies were found to be the least likely to partake in any Valentine’s celebrations, with only 19% Aussie singles saying they plan to celebrate the holiday, compared to the 3 in 10 (29%) singles in the US who are considering their festivities for the day.

While you may think Valentine’s is only geared toward couples, it seems loved-up Aussies are only slightly more inclined to make plans for the big day, with 4 in 10 (42%) of Australian couples surveyed saying they are making plans with their loved one. This is contrasted heavily, perhaps unsurprisingly, with the US where 72% of couples are looking forward to their celebrations.

While the economy could be to blame, singles are also saving their pennies with 55% of those surveyed overall not planning to spend any money at all this Valentine’s Day, which increases to 67% of Australian singles. Perhaps it is due to previous mistakes with how people spend to celebrate, where 27% of people in a relationship have spent more money on Valentine’s Day than on a typical date to impress the person they’re dating. Most commonly this happened in the US with 1 in 3 admitting to this, with only 1 in 5 Aussies having done so.

But you don’t have to break the bank! If you’re looking for a gift to give, the top Valentine’s Day gift ever received according to people in relationships is getting dinner at a restaurant (22%) – something both parties can enjoy, as sadly 40% of single men have never received a V-Day gift.

So, is the concept of Valentine’s Day outdated in modern times and lost on younger generations?
Gen Z and Millennials both have strong opinions about engaging with Cupid in 2024. Gen Z has given their stamp of approval on the love holiday: 67% of Gen Z in relationships care about celebrating Valentine’s Day, and 67% are also planning to celebrate, more than any other generation. However, Millennial singles are ditching their candy sweethearts, flowers, and chocolates, with 32% not planning to celebrate the holiday, and 26% of all single respondents noting it’s not inclusive of singles. 62% of Millennials in relationships claimed they don’t care about V-Day because they can celebrate their partner any time of the year.
